Before you visit a local shooting range, there are some safety rules to be aware of. Beginners can get carried away with their emotions and overlook the safety rules. Just like there are safety precautions to take when handling firearms, there are some rules that must be observed when going to a shooting range.
Here are 7 important things you need to know about shooting range safety: Always wear eye and ear protection. Shooting is loud and can cause hearing damage. You should always wear ear plugs or ear muffs when shooting at a shooting range especially if you're firing a high caliber weapon. Guns should remain unloaded until they are ready for use. This is one of the most basic rules of gun safety, but it's very important. You never want someone else to be able to access your gun while it's loaded or even when it's not loaded but still loaded with ammunition. Before entering the shooting range, make sure your gun is unloaded and stay that way until after you leave. Make sure to always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction. Never point your gun at anything you're not willing to shoot when in shooting range. This means pointing it downrange (toward the targets) or at the backstop (a solid barrier behind the targets). Never point a gun at another person or in any direction that could possibly be unsafe. This is especially important when loading or unloading your weapon, or when clearing malfunctions. Make sure to always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. It's easy to forget that the weapon is loaded, so make sure your finger is away from the trigger until you're ready to fire. If someone accidentally bumps into you while you're holding a gun, they could get injured because of an accidental discharge. Know your target and what’s beyond it. You need to be aware of what is behind your target before pulling the trigger. This includes any people or objects that might be in the way of your bullet. Use only approved targets at a shooting range. Never shoot at glass bottles, cans or other items that could break into pieces and cause injury if hit by a bullet. Be aware of others at the shooting range. You should always be mindful of other people at the shooting range, whether they are members of your party or not. If someone is standing in front of you and they're not paying attention to what they're doing, they could easily get hurt by something that goes wrong with your gun. Feel free to ask questions if you are not sure about something. You should never feel like you are being an inconvenience or a burden on the staff of your shooting range. The staff is there to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask them any questions that come up during your time at the range. They want everyone who uses their facility to be safe and enjoy themselves. If there is something you don’t understand, ask them about it! They will always do their best to answer your questions and help make sure you have a great time on the range.
